holy cow! would you look at the date!

Filed under: General — ladykatza @ 2:29 pm

right, so where to start? i have started my new job at Google. i’m in the hardware repairs department at the moment and really i’m not allowed to say much of anything else. well, ok, i get free drinks, snacks and a catered lunch plus quarterly fun outings. the first friday i was there we played paintball. FUN!

other than that all i can say is life is flying past me in a multitude of colors. to be truly honest i cannot complain(but sometimes i still do). i’d like more sleep, a little extra money… but who doesn’t?

so, next semsester i’m only doing two classes and one of them is an online course. i didn’t fancy having to come to school 5 days a week for math. bleh! my advisor even said that she’s recommend that for me, which she normally doesn’t do. i told her i wanted to take it easy until i was over the HUGE learning curve at work.

simon and felicity… it is hard to describe the changes these two are going through. while the physical growing and changing is obvious, some days i come home and can’t believe the conversation that i just had with my kids.

on a side note, i forgot how nice it is to sit at your desk and stare out the window in a quiet house and let thoughts wander aimlessly.

thoughts on this day, my wedding anniversary

Filed under: General, geek mother's rantings — ladykatza @ 11:41 pm

today marks five years of marital bliss. well, as blissful as any marriage can be.

i think the mistake that so many people make in this time and place is the expectation that everything is a smooth ride after you tie the knot. so much of our society is built up on the romantic expectation of that union that the moment they hit a bump in the rode, someone is out of there. “i’m not doing it right,” or “its all their fault”…

somewhere parents forgot to teach their kids that it is about communication, compromise, love, and friendship. but that brings me on to another subject, which is that parents in this country shelter their children way too much. every bump, scrape, bruise, and harsh word is a crisis.

oh please, its only a flesh wound. scars build character! ok, so being completely callous isn’t the way to go either. its the parable of the shield…shield them too much and they have no skills to survive, shield them too little and they do not survive to adulthood.

there have been times i’ve watch my children fall and hurt themselves because i had already told them over and over again not to do something and why. sometimes getting hurt is the only way they learn. i’d rather a controlled environment than when i’m not there to kiss it better.

these are philosophies of raising children that my husband and i have felt strongly about. you may disagree, you may not.

1) the goal is to raise an adult, not a child
2) every parent, no matter how well intentioned, will install some sort of psychosis or button in their children. it is inevitable. however, if you pay attention to rule one, they will have a better chance of overcoming these than their peers.
3) always remember to ask yourself when bad things happen these two things a) was it fatal? b) was it permanent? if the answer to those two questions is NO, then you are in better shape than you think.
4) never own white furniture

p.s. i rented The Neverending Story and watched it with simon and felicity. you should have seen the smile and light in their eyes. i said “that’s what happens when you read books”.

i am now required to read bedtime stories (not that i wasn’t doing that anyway).

how strange the world of friendship and lovers
the twists and turns of intertwining realities

so many pauses between their meetings
so many times their paths have split

friendship fills a silent space
with an intangible moment of solace

old lovers meet at the crossroads
only to move on with solemn grace

i am now posting from my brand new desk and chair. while its not spectacular, it will serve its function until i can afford high-quality furniture.

do you think with your brain?

the following conversation happened at lunch with simon;

simon: elizabeth, do you think of your body?
me: yes, actually, i think of it every day.
simon: well… i think of my brain.
me: do you mean that you use your brain to think?
simon: yes, that’s right
daecon: your brain is part of your body
simon: what does my brain look like?

this was followed by getting down our copy of Grey’s Anatomy, and simon spent the next 15 minutes or so flipping through it and asking “what is that?” he also requested to see the ribcage, heart, and arm-bones.

where are all the activists?

Filed under: General — ladykatza @ 10:23 am

reading the news about what is going on in this country is depressing, especially if you are reading it from an outside perspective. i hate to burst your bubble, but your local news and CNN don’t tell you the whole story. well, actually, i enjoy telling people this.

the other thing i find depressing? the number of people i associate with in real life and online that are outraged and upset by what is going on. they talk about it, they write about it…

but where is the action? what are they doing? does anyone bother to write to their representatives? do they go vote? are you doing anything?

i saw a demonstration in front of the GA capitol building one day for the rights of gay marriage. i didn’t see anything about it on the news. nothing. one little local “liberal” paper/website had a blurb on it. whoever “they” are, “they” managed to keep it out of the media.

there are two things happening, i believe:

1) liberals and democrats are all talk and no action
2) those that are taking action are being written out of the media
